Sports massage was initially established to help athletes prepare their bodies for peak performance, recover after a big event, and or to combat the rigors of training. Sports massage Therapist put emphasis on prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons that surround the joints of the human body.
You don’t have to be an Olympic contender to benefit from sports massage therapy. Sports massage is an excellent choice for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The massage therapist generally concentrates on a specific problem area. (Sore neck and shoulders, anyone?) This is the type of sports massage that you see in the spa
What Happens During Sports Massage?
Sports massage usually starts out as a type of Swedish massage that encourages circulation of blood and lymph fluids. During sports massage movements the therapist locates trigger points and then utilizes specific trigger point therapy to break down adhesions (knots in the muscles) which increases the muscles’ ability to heal and become more functional.
There are four types of sports massages:
- Pre-event sports massage — a stimulating massage 15 – 45 minutes before the event. It is directed toward the parts of the body that will be called upon during an upcoming sporting event.
- Post-event sports massage – Typically performed within an hour or two of the event, to normalize the body’s tissues.
- Restorative sports massage — performed during as part of the actual training to allow the athlete to train harder and hopefully with less injury.
- Rehabilitative sports massage — aimed at easing pain due to injury and assisting the muscles ligaments and tendons to health.
When Should I Get A Sports Massage?
A sports massage at Premier Pain Solution located in the Camelback corridor is a good choice if you have a sports specific problem — a tender knee or shin splits from running, or a sore shoulder from tennis, baseball or lifting weights. The Sports Massage therapist typically focuses in on your problem rather than giving you a full-body massage.
